Johnson takes over at Sylvan Learning

CUMBERLAND – Rebecca Johnson who is taking over ownership of the Cumberland and Coventry Sylvan Learning locations from Gail Tuominen, the original owner who opened the Cumberland Sylvan 20 years ago last month and has facilitated the tutoring of thousands of area children over two decades.

Johnson, who along with her husband grew up in Rhode Island but now lives over the line in Connecticut, started with Sylvan in May 2000 after graduating from Rhode Island College and has worked her way up, now getting to realize her dream of business ownership as Tuominen retires.

She says she’s excited to take over takes as Sylvan is celebrating its 40th anniversary.

Johnson said she’s always loved being part of the community, particularly with the Scouts and offering free resources to local schools. Sylvan is also a participant in local events.

As she takes ownership of the tutoring locations, she said it’s made easier by the fact that she already knows so many of the people who come in individually.

She said she would love to grow further, perhaps branching out into South County. The goal, she said, is to be close to where people are so Sylvan can easily supplement their educational needs.

Cumberland’s location at 2176 Mendon Road is typically the busier of the two locations.

Sylvan is unique in providing programs tailored to students, said Johnson. About 80 percent of its work is in supplemental education, building the foundational skills to complement what is happening in school.

“Our goal is to give them what they need so they can find more success,” she said.
