Relatives of veterans asked to pick up flags

LINCOLN – Though the members of Manville’s Alphonse Yelle Post #9 have volunteered to flag the graves of local veterans every Memorial Day, a dwindling number of volunteers and rise in members’ age and health complications have resulted in the decision to flag graves for the final time this year.

Post Commander Donald Gendron said they no longer have the membership to put out flags at the Manville and Albion cemeteries ahead of Memorial Day. Instead, they are asking those veterans’ relatives or friends to pick up their flags at the Alphonse Yelle Post #9 between 7 and 8:30 p.m. on Fridays, beginning May 17.

In celebration of 100 years of service to veterans, the post will also team up with students from Lincoln Central Elementary School on May 22 at 9:30 a.m. to flag St. James Cemetery.
