Memorial Day Parade, road race step off Monday

Expect local closures as roads to be shut down completely

NORTH PROVIDENCE – Everything is a go for the North Providence Memorial Day Parade and Celebration next Monday, May 27, says Mayor Charles Lombardi.

Police this year have to plan traffic management measures to accommodate runners in the first Ahlborg Memorial Day 5K and Kids Fun Run with Mickey, set to go off before the parade.

“We should be all set,” said the mayor. “It’s a big day for us.”

Lombardi and other officials are expecting some 500 to 600 runners to take part in the race.

The parade will start from North Providence High School’s front lot at 1 p.m.

North Providence police say motorists should expect road closures from 11:15 a.m. to 2:30 p.m. next Monday (see below for the road list).

Members of the parade committee previously sought the public’s help in honoring town residents who have served in the military and are no longer with us. Names are being added to a memorial wreath to be displayed throughout the parade route. The wreath will then be placed at the Memorial Stone in Notte Park.

In the event of rain, the ceremony portion of the event will take place at 2 p.m. at the Overlook at Meehan, 2 Governor Notte Park Way.

The Kids Fun Run, for children age 14 and younger, starts at 11:30 a.m., and the 5K road race starts at noon. The start location for the races, according to an announcement for the event, is the RE/MAX Preferred Offices at 1417 Douglas Ave.

Individual awards will be presented to the top three men and women ages 39 and under, as well as the winners of the ages 40-49, 50-59, 60-69, and 70-plus divisions.

The entry fee on the date of the race is $35. The fee for the Kids Fun Run is $15, and individual awards will be presented to the top three boys and girls who finish the race.

Local police have announced that they’ll support military veterans during the 2019 Memorial Day events. Road closures are expected to begin at approximately 11:15 a.m. and conclude at around 2:30 p.m. Douglas Avenue will be closed to ensure safety to all participants who attend the events.

“We ask that if you do plan on attending, please arrive early,” said police in a statement.

Roadways will be shut down completely. The Memorial Day Parade will start immediately after the conclusion of the road race, at approximately 1 p.m. At approximately 12:30 p.m., Mineral Spring Avenue will be completely closed for travel from Smithfield Road eastbound to Douglas Avenue to allow the parade participants to organize.
