Carcifero honored as 2019 Autumnfest grand marshal

WOONSOCKET – Lisa Carcifero, the head of the Blackstone Valley Prevention Coalition known for her longtime advocacy around youth and community health issues, has been named the grand marshal of the 2019 Autumnfest celebration.

Carcifero was surprised with the news during a meeting of the Blackstone Valley Prevention Coalition Wednesday night at Neos restaurant on Cass Avenue. Members of the Autumnfest Steering Committee gathered outside before making a surprise appearance and greeting her with news of the selection per Autumnfest tradition.

“Lisa Carcifero is truly one of our community heroes that is very deserving of being this year’s Autumnfest grand marshal,” said Garrett Mancieri, general chairman of the Autumnfest Steering Committee. “Whether it is her time through the Rotary Club of Woonsocket, the Milk Fund or Blackstone Valley Prevention Coalition, she puts her whole heart into whatever she does and has genuine compassion and care for other people.”

Carcifero, a licensed clinical social worker who has served as head of the Woonsocket Prevention Coalition since 2000, is known throughout the region for her many years of work in substance abuse prevention and her advocacy for city youth. In addition to serving as director of the Blackstone Valley Prevention Coalition, a coalition of seven communities in the greater Woonsocket area, she serves as chairperson of the board of directors of Connecting for Children and Families and a member of the Woonsocket Juvenile Hearing Board. She also serves on the boards of Landmark Medical Center and Senior Services Inc. and has served as chairperson of the Milk Fund Appeal since 2016.

She is an active member of the Rotary Club, serving on the board since 2004 and as president in 2013 and 2014. She has previously been recognized by the YWCA of Northern Rhode Island with a Women of Achievement Award and by Northern Rhode Island Community Services with a Community Champion Award.

“We are very lucky to have someone like her in Woonsocket, and I am so excited to see her being honored and recognized for all her hard work, time, and dedication to improving our community,” said Mancieri.

Carcifero will serve as marshal of the 41st Autumnfest parade, which will take place on Monday, Oct. 14, and also be honored during a grand marshal gala in September. Every year, the committee selects one individual who has, without compensation, given of themselves above and beyond for the betterment of the community. The selection process for the 2019 grand marshal began with an open call for nominations in April.
