CUMBERLAND – At Dina-K Designs Unique Jewelry, there’s a certain emphasis on the word “unique.”

“No two pieces are alike and that’s what I like,” said shop owner and jewelry designer Maria Scirocco, who began selling her handmade wares July 13 at her store at 3456 Mendon Road in Cumberland.

The storefront was most recently The Central Perk, a relatively short-lived “Friends”-themed café.

While the building no longer houses a coffee shop, Scirocco said she’ll happily offer visitors a freshly made espresso and encourages them to stay a while. Her jewelry designs, which range from $12 to $60, are on display at the front of the space, while her open workshop is in the back.

The name Dina-K is derived from Scirocco’s middle name, Eduardina, and the name of her puppy Koko.

Her stock includes necklaces, rings, bracelets and other accessories, made from materials ranging from leather, suede and ribbon to copper, sterling silver and semi-precious stones.

“No two pieces of mine are exactly the same,” she said. “When it’s handmade, it’s handmade.”

The Cumberland resident began “dabbling” in jewelry making several years ago. Last December when she was laid off from her 33-year career in real estate as an administrative assistant, she was given the push she needed to start her business, she said.

In addition to selling her handmade pieces, Scirocco will also offer jewelry repair and cleaning services. She’ll fix anything, “it doesn’t matter what it is,” she said. She’ll also take requests for custom pieces.

While Scirocco’s website is under construction, she said her entire stock will soon be visible online. In the meantime, she is open for business at 3456 Mendon Road, Unit 1, and can be reached at 401-425-8111.
