Upper Deck Junior Division ballclub falls in state finals

WEST WARWICK – The Upper Deck Post 14 Junior Division baseball team was unable to do what the Senior Division ballclub did late last week – defeat Gershkoff/Auburn Post 20 to claim the state title – in their “Final Four” championship game last Thursday night at McCarthy Field.

Upper Deck pitcher Jack LaRose delivered a strong two-hitter that included four strikeouts and no walks, but Gershkoff/Auburn scratched out runs in the fifth and sixth innings and came away with a 2-0 victory.

Andrew Mastin collected two hits for Upper Deck, which had dropped its “Final Four” opener to Post 20 last Monday by a 1-0 score, but battled its way out of the losers’ bracket over the next couple of nights to defeat Bruno Painting, 9-5, and Woonsocket Post 85, 7-5.

The victory over Woonsocket saw Eddie Mulligan lead the way offensively with two hits and three RBIs and J.J. Sanzi also collect two RBI singles.

Upper Deck held a 6-0 lead after 2½ innings, but Woonsocket bravely came back to cut its deficit to two runs. Post 85 also loaded the bases in the bottom of the seventh inning, but left them stranded.

Upper Deck wraps up its fine season with a 17-7 record, which includes its 13-5 mark during the regular season that was good for second place in the North Division, a game behind Woonsocket’s 14-6 record.
