North Providence elementary teacher arrested for child porn

NORTH PROVIDENCE - An elementary school teacher in North Providence has been arrested on child pornography charges.

Anthony Martin, 52, was arraigned and held on bail with special conditions, charged with possession of child pornography. He has worked in the district since 1997, most recently as a music teacher at Stephen Olney and Centredale Elementary Schools.

The arrest came after an investigation into Martin's internet use at his home at 255 Central St. in Lincoln. He allegedly used his home computer to access child pornography.

On Thursday morning, members of the State Police Computer Crimes Unit and Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force executed a search warrant at the address and identified Martin as the alleged owner of digital media used to possess the child pornography.

He was arraigned at Sixth Division District before Associate Judge Houlihan and was held on $5,000 surety bail with special conditions including no unsupervised contact with children and restricted use of the internet.

In an email, Supt. Joseph Goho said there is no evidence at this time that any of the district's students were involved. Martin, who was not named in the email, was placed on "immediate indefinite leave pending further investigation."

Martin has been a music and band teacher in the district for the last 25 years, working in Providence, Mass. and Florida. He has taught at both the elementary and middle school levels in North Providence.

A person found guilty of Possession of Child Pornography may be subject to a fine of not more than $5,000, or imprisoned not more than five years, or both.

This is a developing story that will be updated as The Valley Breeze receives more information.
