Nobrega will run for council seat vacated by Albuquerque

CUMBERLAND - Anthony Nobrega, who was Valley Falls' representative to the Town Council for 10 years, told The Breeze this week he will run for the open seat created when Antonio Albuquerque resigned in late October.

Nobrega, of 105A Victory St., chaired the council's Finance Committee during his entire decade with the council and said that would be his focus again if he's elected.

The election, which by charter must happen within 60 days of an official's resignation, will be open only to District 1 voters - those who live generally from the Central Falls line north to Marshall Avenue on the east side, and along the eastern side of Mendon Road to the Angell Road area on the west.

At midweek, town officials hadn't set an election schedule that will include a period for candidates to declare their intentions, secure nomination signatures and participate in a party primary if needed.

Albuquerque, who was in his second term on the council, removed himself after he pleaded no contest to a charge of domestic assault against a Central Falls girlfriend on Oct. 22.

Nobrega is an investment broker who also handles group health insurance for about 120 companies in Rhode Island.

He's married to Laura Dembishack Nobrega. He has four children and two stepchildren.

Among many civic activities, he's been chairman of the Cumberland Local Education Foundation and on the board of the Blackstone River Theatre and Blackstone Valley Advocacy Center.

He's lived in Cumberland most of his life.
