Electronics recycling, paper-shredding and 'Waste Not' information available on Sunday
NORTH SMITHFIELD - North Smithfield's Recycling Department, in conjunction with Cartridge World Rhode Island and Office Recycling Solutions, will host a computer and electronics collection and paper shredding event on Saturday, Nov. 7, from 9 a.m. to noon at Scouter's Hall in Pacheco Park, 13 Main St.
Rhode Island residents and businesses can dispose of TVs, CPUs/computers, servers, keyboards, spare computer parts, monitors, laptops, network equipment, mouses, laser printers, routers, radios, scanners, fax machines, cables and wires, aluminum, copper, cell phones and telephones.
"Most people do not realize that old electronic items are technically hazardous waste. TV's and computer monitors contain several harmful substances, including mercury and lead. All components can be broken down and recycled properly," said Michael Mancuso, owner of Office Recycling Solutions.
"All TVs and e-waste will be accepted at no charge, so being green is easy and free," said Recycling coordinator Donna Kaehler. "We will also offer paper shredding."
Residents may bring their unwanted papers and documents, which will be sent through an industrial shredder for a cost of 35 cents per pound. All the paper tonnage gets added to North Smithfield's recycling numbers, which is another benefit to the town.
Information will be available regarding the new Waste Not trash and recycling program that will begin in the community on Nov. 16.
"My goal is for all residents to understand and be comfortable with the new program before it starts," said Kaehler. "This is an opportunity to come ask questions, get recycle bins, and learn ways to reduce the amount of trash your family has as garbage."
Another information-only session to discuss the new Waste Not program will be held Thursday, Nov. 12, from 7 to 8 p.m. at the Kendall Dean school building.
