There are only a few short weeks left for the Mount Saint Charles' community, but in those few weeks, activities take place almost every day.
The Fine Arts Department is wrapping up with two shows, one for dance and the other for band. This past Tuesday, the Mount St. Charles dancers took the stage in Art in Motion. The show was a big success, as it is every year. All the dance classes have their own unique style, so the show is never boring.
This Saturday and Sunday, the band students at Mount will have their annual Pops Concert. Similar to the Chorus' Cabaret, tables are set up in the gym for people to sit around, and food is served. It's always a big hit, and the band students do a fantastic job with all their pieces. Some are slow, and others are more upbeat. Hopefully, like previous years, the Pops Concert will be a big hit, and a great way for the band to end their year.
Next Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday, the junior class with take part in the Ropes program. Instead of the usual Recollection, where students sit in groups and talk, the Ropes program helps the class bond in a different way. They learn how to work together in groups, while helping each other with rope obstacles. All the juniors look forward to this because they're not only in school for Recollection talking about faith, friends and family, they're also learning other skills they could use in everyday life.
Also, on Tuesday night, the 7th and 8th grades have Honors Night. Here, students are rewarded for their outstanding grades and excellence in the classroom. Besides receiving high honors and honors awards, students are given awards for Student of the Month, Music Awards and the two select 8th grades are given the Great "8" Award. Some students are even given scholarship awards.
The following night, the 9th and 10th graders have their honors night. Like the 7th and 8th graders, freshmen and sophomores are rewarded for their grades, along with a few other awards. Some students receive the tri-sport award, which is given to students who play three sports, at a varsity level, and maintain honors grades. There's also Young Leader Awards given out to 10th graders. Honors Nights really show the school what wonderful students there are at Mount.
On May 22, chorus and band members get together at Wright's Farm restaurant for the Music Department Awards Dinner and Senior Tribute. That name was too long though, so the members of band and chorus shortened the name to "Chicken Night." Here, members of both groups are recognized, and seniors have their last farewell. The night is always a huge hit, with great food and fun times with friends. And everyone knows the following day is almost every Mount student's favorite day, Mount Day!
Mount Day is a day for hanging out with friends, going down the Slip-and-Slide, and watching the classes compete against each other. The day starts off with a breakfast, and then the Mount community heads to the gym for some fun. Games are played between classes to see which class can come out on top, which are usually the seniors. Also, various sports awards are given, like MVP awards. Once the games are finished, students are free to roam the campus, and spend the morning hanging out with friends. The hit of the day though is always the Mount Slip-and-Slide, which is placed over the hills in the front of the school. If you're standing by it, there's a good chance someone will come by and pull you down.
The following Tuesday, May 27, the Junior High band and chorus travel to Boston to spend a day shopping and performing. The junior high spends all of May counting down the days to Boston, and they all come back with stories about their amazing time.
That same night all the high school students who play a spring sport get together for Spring Sports Awards. Every member of every spring team is recognized and some coaches even put a little speech together with a story involved. The night is a fun time, just hanging around with members of your team.
After the week and a half of fun filled activities, then seniors know their time at Mount is coming to a close, and exams are quickly approaching. Even the rest of the Senior High will start to review for finals, but only after they spend a week doing the more fun things the school has to offer.
