Learn tree identification skills in Lincoln
LINCOLN - The Lincoln Land Trust's tree inventory and identification skills class is this Friday, May 9, at 6:30 p.m. in Town Hall, 100 Old River Road.
Through a grant from the state Department of Environmental Management's Division of Forest Environment, the land trust will conduct a street tree inventory throughout the town.
Organizers say a tree inventory is a collection of data on town trees that grow inside the first 8 to 10 feet of a curb. Data such as diameter, location and species is recorded and later used for townwide planning, maintaining tree canopy and in assessing tree health and replacement.
A total of 1,138 trees comprising 58 different species were counted during the last tree inventory, says Judy Hadley, chair of the Lincoln Land Trust. Approximately one-third of the town inventory is complete. The goal is to complete the rest of the town by the end of August.
The Lincoln Land Trust is looking for 30-35 new volunteers to help complete this goal. All are invited, from Scouting troops, garden clubs, students and retirees.
To volunteer, call Hadley at 724-5292, or e-mail treelady@cox.net.
