Balance highlights Cumberland Minors softball
CUMBERLAND - There appears to be plenty of balance in the Cumberland Minors Softball League as every team has already suffered at least one loss.
In action last week, the Angels crunched the Phillies, 14-3. Leading the way on offense for the winners were Molly Helms, Emily Faria and Natalie Kulacz. Kayleigh Canavan was outstanding, pitching three shutout innings, aided by an unassisted double play by Kate Foley.
The Phillies offense was paced by Molli Mowry, Michaela Simanski and Mikayla Bowerfind.
The Angels edged the Mariners, 9 to 8, in a very exciting contest. The winners broke open a close game with five runs in the fifth inning to take a 7-1 lead. But the Mariners stormed back with seven runs in the top of the sixth to take the lead.
The Angels were able to bounce back with a pair of markers in their last turn at bat to win. Leading the Angels offense were Kate Foley, Molly Helms and Kaitlyn Anthes, all with two hits. The Mariners offense was lead by multiple hit games from Justine Ballou, Jillian McCann and Emily D'Abrosca. D'Abrosca also pitched three strong innings holding the Angels to just one run.
In a strong team effort, the Phillies beat the Cardinals, 15-11. Lauren Smith, the starting Phillies pitcher, allowed only one run in the first two innings. Katrina Juntunen smoked a double and single, and Lauren Smith and Kathryn Cunningham added two singles each. Madison Thornhill was a monster for the Cards, belting three hits.
The Angels lead the league at 3-1, followed by the Indians and Orioles, 2-1; Mariners, 1-1-1; Phillies, 1-3; and the Cardinals, 0-2-1.
