Red takes the lead in girls softball

CUMBERLAND - Red has taken the early lead in the Cumberland Junior/Senior Softball League.

Behind the pitching of Allison Leso, who fired a two-hitter and whiffed seven, Red took down Purple, 4-2, on Saturday. Ashley Noke pitched well in defeat, allowing four runs on six hits and fanning six. Michaela Criscione paced the Red offense with a pair of hits.

Brianna Pina played a solid game at first base for the Red team, and Stephanie Oliveira turned in a great performance behind the plate. The Purple team was led defensively by Becky Geddes behind the plate as she threw out a runner at third late in the game. In other games, Blue knocked off Purple, 14-3, behind the complete game pitching of Caylin Legare. Kayla Resendes had two hits including a triple, and Cassie Czarn scored a pair of runs and played solid defense for the winners.

Teal topped Blue, 8-2 behind a strong pitching performance by Nicole Fontaine and excellent defense by Nicole Grinsell. The runs were produced by key hits from Sara Boebinger and Jocelyn Vaughn.

Ashley Remillard cracked a two-run single for Blue.

Teal and Red battled to a 3-3 tie. Sarah Frechette had a defensive game for Red, while Jess Lariviere pitched a complete game for Teal.

The game was tied 2-2 going into the last inning when Red came up and after a lead off walk to Briana Pina, Katie Costa dragged a bunt for a hit and moved Pina along the base path. Pina eventually scored the go ahead run. In the bottom half of the inning, Danni Feather worked a walk, stole second and then scored the tying run on a solid smash by Allie McCormick.

Purple crushed Yellow, 16-7 Ashley Noke had a monster game with a homer and two singles, and Hailey DiSpirito cracked three hits for the winners. Kassidy McCormick slammed a triple and double and Trini Packham added two hits to lead Teal to an 11-1 win over Blue. Nicole Fontaine pitched a complete game two-hitter for the winners.

Red is in first place at 2-0-1, followed by Teal, 2-1-1; Purple, 2-2; Blue, 2-2; and Yellow, 0-3.
