Lincoln Animal Shelter closing needs more study
I have heard from more people about the plans to close the animal shelter in Lincoln than any other issue. Yet I wonder how many people know this is under serious consideration.
Personally I want Lincoln to have its own animal control program, and our own animal shelter. I know there is a lot of talk about regionalization and cutting costs, but the animal control program is less than two-tenths of one percent of the budget in Lincoln. I don't understand why there is so much focus on cutting expenses in this one program.
There has been some criticism of our present program by municipal officials. If there are areas that need to be improved then we should do it, but don't give up the whole program.
The Volunteers at the Animal Shelter have dedicated 25 years or more to this program. They have raised money and supported the shelter, and this may be a reason the cost of operating this shelter is so low.
The love and care they have for the animals and the support and advice they have given to people who have adopted animals is invaluable. Are we going to say thanks, but we don't need you any longer?
I hope there is a public discussion on the issue before any plans are finalized to close the shelter or turn it over to another organization.
