Colts Pee Wees top Fairlawn
CUMBERLAND - With their eyes on a playoff spot, the Cumberland Colts Blackstone Valley Youth Football League Pee Wee team topped the Fairlawn Cardinals, 21-12 Saturday.
The win boosted the team's record to 4-3, and if it is able to defeat rival Lincoln on Sunday at Tucker Field, it will earn a playoff spot.
Brandon Caouette led the Colts on their opening drive, picking up big yardage out of the wildcat formation. Josh Cayer capped the drive by scoring his first touchdown of the season on a seven-yard scamper.
Quarterback Kyle Patrie found David Wandrey with an accurate throw to add the point after, and Cumberland had an early 7-0 lead.
The Colts got back into the end zone with just four ticks left on the clock when Jared Talbert barged his way into the end zone. Patrie again tossed a strike to Wandrey in the end zone for the PAT.
The Colts defense was stingy, allowing only six points. The other Cardinals score came on a kickoff return. Anchoring the defensive effort were Kyle Moitosa, Josh Holzberger, Chris Ramzi and Alex Giguere.
Brody Felice led the Colts down the field in the fourth quarter, ripping off several huge gains, and Patrie sealed the deal by getting into pay dirt for a six-pointer. Caouette punched in the point after.
The Junior Midget team turned in a strong effort, but were unable to get by the undefeated Cardinals, dropping a 19-0 decision. The Cardinals team has not allowed a point all season.
Standout players for the Colts included Dylan Faria at both center and nose tackle, Gian Wilson and Jon Stoddart, who both had a good game on both sides of the ball.
The Colts Mitey Mites also put up a great effort against the strong Fairlawn team, but lost, 30-6. Colts offense led by Jovani Garcia, Cameron Faria, Billy Free, and Drew Fahy all worked to gain positive yards.
The Colts defense held its own against a fast paced Cardinal offense, Zach Vagnini, Jacob Morey, Casey McCauley, and John Bouffard all were key contributors.
Fairlawn also won the Junior Pee Wee game, 25-7.
