Cougar girls soccer season ends with pair of losses

NORTH PROVIDENCE - The North Providence High School girls soccer team ended its season with a pair of Division III North losses last week.

The Lady Cougars dropped a 5-1 decision to second-place North Smithfield, and then lost to Johnston, 3-0.

North Smithfield, 10-3-2 in division play, put the game away early, scoring four first-half goals to take a 4-0 lead at intermission.

The Northmen got a pair of goals from Carissa Aubin and one each from Amanda Guilmette, Tori Franceschi and Morgan Gillis. Earning assists were Kayla Strick, Ashley Pelletier, Ashley Fontaine and Jillian Vanhouwe.

Michaela Scampoli had North Providence's goal, assisted by Monica DaSilva.

Sidra Ethier and Cara Figuerido combined to make four saves for North Smithfield, while MacKenzie DeCrescenzo and Claudia Pak turned aside nine Northmen shots.

Against Johnston, the Lady Cougars stayed close for a half, trailing only 1-0, but the Panthers came on in the second half and scored twice more to pull out a 3-0 win. Angelica Beaumier had a pair of goals for the winners, while Jessica Carroll added one.

DeCrescenzo had 14 saves in the Cougar net while North Providence only managed five shots on goal during the game.

North Providence finished its season at 3-11-2 in Division III North. The team scored 24 goals during the season and allowed 48.
