Jets Varsity, Jr. Pee Wees roar past North End 49ers
NORTH PROVIDENCE - In what could be a Super Bowl preview, the North Providence Jets Rhode Island Pre-Teen Football League Varsity team knocked off the previously unbeaten North End 49ers, 22-6, Sunday and are the only undefeated team in the league in their division.
During the week, the team played a makeup game against the Johnston Panthers and came away with a 22-6 win, setting up Sunday's showdown game.
Against Johnston, the versatile Jets got a pair of touchdowns from quarterback Anthony Robbio and one from Martin Bannerman. Joel Diaz and Sam Odukoya added points after touchdown conversions.
Defensively, Christian Daoheuang recorded a huge sack and leading tacklers were Diaz, Robbio and Bannerman.
In Sunday's outing, Bannerman cracked through for a pair of scores and Diaz added one. Diaz and Jabriel Ali Fonseca added conversions.
Defensively, the Jets played ball hawk, coming up with a pair of interceptions by Cameron Pezza and Ricky Silva, and Art Corsini recovered a fumble. Tom Marchand continued his strong play on defense.
The Jets' other undefeated team, the Junior Pee Wee squad, remained that way with a 26-6 win over the 49ers.
Cameron Hixon got the Jets off and running with an early touchdown, and they never looked back as the team improved to 7-0-0 for the year and will be the first Jets Junior Pee Wee team to put together an undefeated season. The Jets program hosts West Elmwood on Sunday. That organization has no Junior Pee Wee team, so the JuniorPpee Wees will get a forfeit and be 8-0 heading into playoffs the following week.
Zach Estrella found his way into the end zone for the team's second score, and Hixon visited pay dirt once again for the third touchdown.
Estrella electrified the home field crowd in the fourth quarter when he ran the ball, found an opening, wove his way through the defense and raced 85 yards for the final touchdown. He also completed a pass to Brian Oliver for a PAT.
Coach Josh Johnson's defensive unit also put together another solid game.
The Jets Pee Wee team dropped a 20-16 decision against the 49ers, but earlier in the week, swamped Johnston, 42-6. In that game, Mike Filaye and Kenneth Yeboah each scored three touchdowns, with one of Yeboah's a 60-yard kickoff return. Nevan Gordon and Dante Defalco got into the scoring act by scoring PATs.
Against the 49ers, the Jets showed that they can play with the 49ers and a break here or there could have changed the outcome. Yeboah continued his torrid scoring, adding two more touchdowns to his growing resume, and Filaye and Yeboah added two-point conversions.
The team was without the services of Gordon, one of its better players, who sat out with an injury.
The Junior Varsity team dropped a 28-6 decision to the strong 49ers, who are in first place. Brandon Nunez had the Jets' only score. Nunez and Dom Pereira also recorded interceptions, and Evan Mathias had a huge game on defense.
All of the Jets' competitive teams, Junior Pee Wee, Pee Wee, Junior Varsity and Varsity, have qualified for playoffs. Pairings will be announced after Sunday's games have been completed.
