CYAC crowns its playoff champions
CUMBERLAND - After limping through a season when rain forced cancellations on several weeks, the Cumberland Youth Soccer Association was graced with perfect weather during championship Saturday when playoff champions were crowned in each competitive division.
In the Girls U-16 championship game, the Ice Cream Machine took the title with a shoot-out win over Citizens Bank. Citizens Bank gained the finals by beating Subway, 3-0, and Ice Cream Machine topped www.CaribbeanTanRI.com.
The Boys U-16 title also was decided in a shoot-out with Grass Roots of New England downing Subway. Subway made its way to the finals with a 1-0 win over Lepine Financial Advisors, while Grass Roots got to the finals by beating Michael's Meats in another shoot-out.
Impress Cleaners, the third-place finisher during the regular season, captured the Girls U-10 championship. In the finals, Impress blanked Rhode Island Novelty, 2-0, as Emily Haviland came up huge, scoring both goals.
Rhode Island Novelty got to the finals by edging Cumberland House of Pizza 2-1 in the semifinals, while Impress squeezed past Bain, Farrell ReMax, 1-0.
Rhode Island Novelty, the top seed, took the Boys U-10 Division championship, beating second-seeded World Trophy 3-0 behind goals by Jonathan Baker, Aidan Bagley and Alec Teichmann.
In the opening round, Rhode Island Novelty was nearly eliminated by the eighth-seeded Dante Ramos M.D. They trailed 3-2 with under two minutes to go, when they tied it up, forcing overtime, when they scored the winning goal.
Lepre Physical Therapy, second-place finisher during the regular season, got it together when it counted most and beat first-place Photography Associates, 1-0, in the championship final.¬
Kyra Ramos scored the game winner.
Photography Associates got to the finals by beating Dolan Insurance, 3-1, while Lepre went to the finals on the strength of a 2-0 win over Heffernan Law Offices.
In the Boys U-13 Division, Domino's Pizza, the regular season champion, took the playoff title as well by beating The Habitat, third-place finisher during the regular season, 3-1.
Colin Froment, Evan Anderson and Dillon Moran scored for Domino's, and Collin Simmons had his team's lone goal.
