Sentinels in boys Division II soccer final four

Smithfield High School continued its strong play and shut out Middletown 1-0 in a D-II semi-final match last week, the last of the season at the Boyle.

Alex Bedrosian scored the only goal of the game in the 32nd minute, converting a cross from Tucker Marszalek, and brother Krikor had to make just five saves as he earned his eighth shutout win of the season.

The victory put the Sentinels in the semi-finals and a match against East Greenwich that was scheduled for last night (Wednesday, Nov. 4) at Bishop Hendricken.

One day after the Ponaganset girls were knocked out of the soccer playoffs by Prout Memorial, the Chieftain lads fell victim to the same school on the same Narragansett field and were eliminated from the D-II post-season by a 3-1 margin. The Chiefs and the Crusaders had battled to a 1-1 draw earlier in the season.

Senior keeper Cody Gibb, in his last high school game, played tough, stopping 15 of 18 Prout shots. The sides were even at intermission, 1-1.

David Gelsomino's unassisted first-half goal was PHS' only offense. Goals by J.P. Underwood and Brian Gilman in the second half sent the Crusaders along to the semi-finals and a match at Smithfield two nights ago. Ponaganset ended the 2009 season at 5-6-5 in D-III,
