CUMBERLAND - The Cumberland Over 35 Softball League, with seven teams this year instead of six, opened league play last week at Tucker Field.
Past R Time posted its first win of the season, taking down The Beer Mug, 15-3 behind the pitching of Jim Goosman. Goosman also wielded a hot bat, cracking a homer and a single. Bill Read stroked four hits and Billy Hulme had three. Beer Mug collected six scattered singles in the battle of two new teams.
Defending champion Affordable Services picked up where they left off last season and hammered King's Towing, 15-8 as George Sankey had the hot hand, drilling a pair of homers. Rich Goudreau also went yard and added a single. Jack Newbauer belted a pair of triples and Jim Medeiros had three hits. Pep Pado was the winning pitcher.
For King's Jim Murphy took the mound loss. Kevin Kwolek, Al Crowe and Dave Rosa all knocked one out of the park.
The game was back-and-forth early on and was tied 7-7 after three innings, but Affordable kept scoring and turned its defense up a notch, allowing only one run the rest of the way.
Cumberland A.C. opened with a 14-7 win over Supercuts behind the pitching of Brian Millette. George Williams belted one out of the park and Frankie Fernandes and Pete Laverty had three hits each for the winners. Scott Schmitt had a pair of hits for Supercuts.
