David F. Adamonis - Cumberland
David F. Adamonis, 62, passed away peacefully Oct. 10, 2009, surrounded by his loving family at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence.He was the beloved husband of Roberta M. (Mitchell) Adamonis for 43 years. Born in Pawtucket, he was the son of Amelia and the late Fred Adamonis. Adamonis resided in Cumberland before moving to Hallandale Beach, Fla., in 2000. David is survived by his wife, Roberta; his mother, Amelia; his brother John and his wife Kyle; and his children, Kimberly Adamonis, David Adamonis Jr and his wife Patricia and PGA tour member Brad Adamonis and his wife Stacey. David was the loving grandfather of five grandchildren, Ross and Kristin Robertson, Grace and Nicholas Adamonis and Lauren Adamonis.
David served as the director of golf at Johnson & Wales University in Miami, Fla. Additionally, he was the head coach of the men’s golf team. Adamonis led the Wildcats to eight straight National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics National Championship appearances, including a 2005 National Championship. In 2005, Adamonis was named NAIA Coach of the Year. In 2008, he was named Golfweek Magazine Father of the Year. Adamonis spent the previous 27 years as a schoolteacher and hockey coach in the Johnston school system. In 1980 Adamonis founded the United States Challenge Cup Junior Golf Foundation, which has become one of the most successful junior golf programs in the country. David was a graduate of Providence College, where he was a recipient of the prestigious Mal Brown Award in 1968. A four-year member of the golf team, he played in two NCAA Championships and was a Rhode Island Public Links Champion. David, who founded Ocean State and Bay State Golf Publications, was a member of the Golf Writers’ Association of America, the International Network of Golf and the Rhode Island and New England Golf Course Superintendent associations. He also was a former Rhode Island and a National Ice Hockey Officials Association hockey official.
His funeral will be held Wednesday, Oct. 14, at 8 a.m. from J.J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9 a.m. at St. Joseph’s Church, 1303 Mendon Road, Cumberland. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting hours will be held Tuesday from 4-8 p.m. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to MGH Fund, Massachusetts General Hospital, Development Office, 165 Cambridge Street, Suite 600, Boston, MA 02114.
