It could all come down to this.
The undefeated Woonsocket Middle School baseball team and the once-beaten North Cumberland team were scheduled to meet this week in a game that could decide the Rhode Island Principals Committee on Athletics Northwest Division regular season championship.
If Woonsocket, which beat NCMS in the season opener for both teams, prevails at home, they'll have a two-game lead, but if coach Steve Cardoso's North Cumberland crew pulls through, the teams will be tied with one loss apiece. Both teams have gone basically unchallenged by the rest of the league.
Mount St. Charles Academy, which opened the season strong, absorbed two losses in the first round, to Woonsocket and North Cumberland, and sits in third place.
In its only game last week, coaches Tom Brien and Mike Champagne's WMS squad moved to a perfect 6-0 for the season with an 8-0 win at the expense of North Smithfield. Kory Lawrence, Jon Flynn and Wilfredo Navarro combined to fire a two-hitter, striking out nine.
Leading the offense were Zack Laprade, Flynn and Zack Ledoux. Kyle Mercier and Ryan Masnyk had the Northmen hits. Aaron Catarina looked good in relief for North Smithfield, working three innings and allowing one run while whiffing four.
North Cumberland hammered both North Smithfield and Mount by identical 11-1 scores last week as Cardoso's offense, after a slow start, is turning into a wrecking crew.
North Smithfield actually jumped out to the lead by scoring once in the first inning when Tom Bourgeois walked, pilfered second and came around when Sean Simmons singled. But that would be the extent of their scoring as pitchers Justin Patrick, two innings, and Eric Murray, three innings, shut them out the rest of the way.
Josh Rodin continued his hot hitting for NCMS, lashing a pair of doubles, while Ryan Harris, Mike Silva and Caleb Gardner stroked a pair of hits each. Also coming up with key hits were Greg Joubert, Matt Bare and Max Carlston.
Tom Lazaras provided the web gem, making a leaping snare of a line drive, and Mitch Gaboury was solid behind the plate.
Mount's only loss had been to WMS, but it was no contest against NCMS. North opened the scoring in the first when Gardner poked a two-out single, stole second and raced home on a Justin Patrick single. Patrick stole second and made it 2-0 when Pat Noke cracked a base hit.
In the top of second inning, Mount's Matt Coughlin singled, stole second and was gunned down at the plate by Mikey Silva while attempting to score on a base hit. NCMS tacked on a run in the second and one in the third as Noke singled, advanced to third on a Eric Murray base knock and scored on a Gaboury single.
MSC was able to push a run across in the sixth, but the North Stars erupted in their half, ending the game as Noke cracked his third hit of the game, Michael Kinch doubled, Tom Fownes singled, Ryan Harris singled, Sean Seaver singled, along with several Mount miscues produced a seven-run run inning.
Fownes pitched his second consecutive complete game and the lefty was effective, limiting MSC to a single run.
Gallagher Middle School came up with its first two wins of the season, thrusting the team back into the playoff hunt. Coach Dave Martin's team downed McCourt of Cumberland, 9-6, and then defeated Burrillville, 9-2.
It didn't start off well for Gallagher against McCourt as the Cumberland team put five runs on the board in the top of the first inning, But Jeff Tessier came on in relief and turned in his team's best pitching performance of the season, going the rest of the way and allowing only one run on three hits.
Gallagher was handed a huge seven-run inning in the second when McCourt made errors on five consecutive ground balls.
Jeff Langellier smoked a double and single and knocked in three runs, and Tony Kane cracked a pair of singles to lead Gallagher. Zach Fawcett collected two of the six hits for McCourt.
Gallagher made it two in a row as they beat Burrillville behind the pitching of Ben Marzsalek, who pitched a complete game, allowing only two hits and whiffing nine.
Dave Parrillo was the big gun at the plate, belting a pair of doubles, knocking in two and scoring two. Marzsalek chipped in with a pair of hits.
Mount broke out on top against McCourt, and then held on for a 7-5 win as the McCourt team refused to fold. Brian Campbell was the winning pitcher and Sean Corliss took the loss. Peter Travers continued his torrid hitting for McCourt, belting three hits, including a double.
Tyler Geffert rapped a triple and single for Mount.
Heading into the week, Woonsocket was in first at 6-0, followed by North Cumberland, 6-1; Mount, 5-2; Gallagher, 2-3; McCourt, 2-5; Burrillville, 1-5; and North Smithfield, 0-6.
