Close competition sparks A Division softball play

WOONSOCKET - Commissioner Don LaRoche is already smiling.

That's because there appears to be plenty of balance in the Woonsocket Independent Softball League's top division this season. It's only two weeks into the season and every team already has at least one loss.

In opening games, Pool Pro outscored PGL Construction, 26-25 as Jeff Boudreau laced a homer and four singles and Dave Capicillo cracked five hits, including a pair of two-baggers. Paul Mullaly and Bob Saillant added round-trippers for the winners.

Jon Shorrock slammed a homer and two doubles, Jake Sullivan, homer and two doubles and Dave L'Etoile, four hits for PGL.

Defending champion Universal Cutts crunched Grumpy's, 23-6 as Tadji Chattman exploded into the new season with a pair of homers and a double and Kyle Sheehan, Travis Russ, Tim Chamberland and Matt Jollie all had three hits.

Universal beat Grumpy's again, 13-8 as Sheehan collected three more hits.

Prudential just got past Home Team, 11-10 as Scot Desper had a monster game with a homer and three singles, and Bob Desper and Paul Boucher added three hits each. Rob Beauregard had three hits for Home Team.

Home Team reversed that outcome with a 13-9 win over Prudential as Kevin McCreadie slammed three doubles and Kenny Lopez rapped three hits Karl Allaire belted four hits for Prudential.

Universal Cutts got by George's Pizza, 10-8. Tadji Chattman and Rashaad Chaplin went yard for the winners, with Chattman adding a double and two singles to his night's work.

George's reserved the outcome with a 12-11 win over Universal as Ed Maroney slammed a homer and double and Jeremy Gaucher cracked a triple and two singles. Travis Russ slammed a triple and three singles for Universal.

Prudential beat American Beauty Signs, 10-8 as Paul Boucher, Bruce Tokarski and Bob Desper had three hits each. Paul Decesare banged three hits for American.

American scored five runs in the fifth inning and upset Prudential, 8-5, the big hit a bases-clearing triple by Jon Heroux.

George's Pizza got a homer, double and single by Ed Maroney and took down Home Team, 15-3.
