WOONSOCKET - It was a special night for Alex Lataille and Blaine Desimpelaere as both launched the first home runs of their Little League careers to lead Bernon's Woonsocket Firefighters to a 9-8 extra inning win over East Woonsocket Little League's Rotary Club Red Sox during inter league action last week.
Lataille, 10, made it even more memorable by slamming two out of the park, and Desimpelaere's was a grand slam.
It was a see-saw battle as the Red Sox broke on top 3-1 in the first inning and appeared to sew things up in the top of the fifth by scoring three runs. But the Firefighters roared back tied the game and won it in the extra inning.
A key point in the game came in the bottom of the fourth when with two runners aboard, the Red Sox intentionally walked Lataille, who had homered in his two previous trips to the pate. Desimpelaere spoiled the strategy when he bombed one out of the park for a grand slam.
Tim Crane of the Red Sox belted three singles.
