Emmy Wilhelmina Stegeman – Cumberland

Emmy Wilhelmina Stegeman – Cumberland

Emmy Wilhelmina Stegeman, 86, born in The Hague, Netherlands and a resident of Cumberland for more than 40 years, died June 11, 2017, at the Philip Hulitar Hospice Center in Providence, R.I.

She was the beloved wife of Robert A. Stegeman who died in 2006, and is survived by her loving family: son Robert H. Stegeman of Cumberland, R.I., his wife, Ellen, and their daughters Erin and Kara and granddaughter Scarlett; Pat Mastors of Exeter, R.I., her husband, Jim, and their children Nick, Jess and Elizabeth; John A. Stegeman of Suwanee, Georgia, his wife, Cindy and their sons Scott and Troy, and David A. Stegeman of Del Ray Beach, Florida, his wife, Melissa, and their children Brooke, Paige and Drew.

Emmy Klaassen was the daughter of Wilhelmina and Hank Klaassen. She emigrated from the Netherlands in 1953 when she married Robert A. Stegeman, then a Corporal in the U.S. Army and the son of family friends. Emmy was the only sister and last survivor among five siblings. She often shared with family and friends deeply impactful memories of being a young child in the Netherlands under German occupation during World War II, and how her family came together to survive and help others through the hardships that ensued.

Upon starting her new life in the United States, Emmy’s sideline to being a dedicated wife and mother was playing contract bridge. She played 3-4 times a week and soon reached the pinnacle of accomplishment as a Life Master. She was most proud of her four children, all of whom, as she would readily say, “have been happily married for more than 25 years, with good kids and good jobs.” Most recently she lived at Atria Lincoln Place, where she became known for her assertive wit, sense of humor and uncanny tendency to win at Bingo. Her family is grateful for the kindness and friendships offered by residents and staff at Atria during Emmy’s last months.
