Cumberland Happy Basket program accepting donations of toys, food and time this holiday season

CUMBERLAND – The Cumberland Happy Basket Program is teaming up with Toys for Tots to provide more than 300 Cumberland children with gifts for the upcoming holiday season.

The Happy Basket Program helps ensure that families in need in Cumberland receive food baskets and toys over the holidays. This year, Dean Warehouse Services is sponsoring the USMC Foundation Toys for Tots program, with assistance from Amanda McLaughlin.

New, unwrapped toys, gifts and clothes for children ages infant to 13 can be dropped off at the following locations: Cumberland Physical Therapy, Everybody’s Favorite Restaurant, Dean Warehouse Services, Cumberland Public Library, Navigant Bank, Cumberland Town Hall, all Cumberland Fire Departments and Uno Pizza, KC’s Burgers and Cerrone GMC, all in North Attleboro, Mass. The Arnold Mills Boy Scout and Cub Scout Troops are also conducting a toy drive.

Toys will be picked up at the donation centers on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 14 and 15.

Monetary donations can also be made for food and toys. Make checks payable to the Cumberland Happy Basket Program and send to P.O. Box 7611, Cumberland, RI 02864.

Since it began in 1992, the Happy Basket program has distributed close to 14,000 baskets.

“It’s a testament to the kindness shown by so many others that Happy Baskets has been able to deliver so many baskets of food and so many toys to those in need,” John Johnson, director of Cumberland Happy Baskets, said in a release.

Anyone wishing to volunteer a few hours of their time sorting donations, wrapping gifts and assembling baskets, or anyone wishing to adopt a child or children to personalize their toy donations, is asked to call Johnson at 401-487-1282 or email

Food baskets for the Christmas giveaway will be put together on Thursday, Dec. 14, starting at 6 p.m. at the Cumberland Senior Center, located behind the Cumberland Public Library, 1464 Diamond Hill Road.

There will also be a gift wrapping party on Saturday, Dec. 16, at the Senior Center starting at 9 a.m. Participants are encouraged to bring scissors, tape, and a toy to wrap, though a gift is not required.
