Stephen Roy Dooley – Cumberland

Stephen Roy Dooley, 68, passed away suddenly at home, Tuesday, August 14, 2018. He was the beloved husband of Carolyn M. (Athey) Dooley. Born in Providence, he was a son of the late Joseph F. and Ruth (Kincade) Dooley.

Lt. Col. (Ret) Dooley was a graduate of the United States Military Academy at West Point (1972) with a Bachelor of Science in Engineering, commissioned as a 2nd Lt. and entered the Signal Corps branch. He served in the U.S. Army during the Vietnam War and Persian Gulf. He earned his Juris Doctorate at The Catholic University of America, Columbus School of Law (1978) and served as an attorney in the Judge Advocate General Corps. He furthered his education as a scholar by achieving an MBA degree at Suffolk University (1981) and a Master of Laws degree, LLM, post JD degree, from George Washington University in 1987.

Throughout his U.S. Army career, his overseas tours included the demilitarized zone of South Korea and at the U.S. Army, Europe HQ in Heidelberg, Germany. Additional tours of duty included: Ft. Hood, Texas, Ft. Devens, Mass.; Ft. Sill, Okla.; Ft. Gordon, Ga.; and several tours in the Military District of Washington, D.C. He retired in 1997 as a Lt. Colonel at Ft. Myer, Arlington, Va.

Following retirement from the U.S. Army, Lt. Col. (Ret) Dooley worked as an attorney for the Department of Defense in Boston. He served as the Chief Trial Attorney in the Defense Contract Management Agency (DCMA). Lt. Col. (Ret) Dooley lived in Cumberland for 20 years and was a member and past Executive Board member of the Cumberland-Lincoln Chapter of the Lions Club International. He also was the President of the West Point Society of R.I.; R.I. Field Force Officer for USMA at West Point; member of the West Point Association of Graduates; St. Pius V Church Parish Council; and a leader in the Boy Scouts of America, Troop 53.

In addition to his loving wife, Stephen is survived by his son, Capt. Joseph S. Dooley, U.S. Army, and his wife, Shelley Starkey, of Ft. Meade, Md., and, daughter, Stephanie L. Dooley. He was the brother of Joseph M. Dooley, Falls Church, Va.

Funeral will be held Saturday, Sept. 8, 2018 at 8:30 a.m. from the Tucker-Quinn Funeral Chapel, 643 Putnam Pike (Rt.44) Greenville, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 10 a.m. at St. Pius V Church, 55 Elmhurst Ave., Providence, R.I. Graveside burial with military honors will be in St. Francis Cemetery, Pawtucket, R.I. Visitation is Friday, Sept. 7, 2018, from 5-8 p.m. Flowers or donations to the American Diabetes
