CSP United U13 girls win Columbus Day Classic

EASTHAM, Mass. - Back in Cape Cod after capturing the U12 championship last year, the Cumberland Youth Soccer Organization's CSP United U13 girls' soccer team took home another title, this time winning the U13 Premier division trophy of the Columbus Day Classic at Nauset Regional High School.

After posting a 2-1 record in pool play that included 3-0 and 8-0 victories, followed by a 3-1 loss to Spatial de St. Hubert (a Canadian team located south of Montreal) in its pool play finale, CSP United came back to face St. Hubert in the championship game and produce a hard-fought 4-1 victory that gave them the U13 crown.

Midway through the first half, Abby Vallely gave CSP United a 1-0 lead by scoring off the rebound of a shot by Abby Fleisig off a defender, but St. Hubert soon responded with the next goal, and just like their pool play game, both teams were tied at 1-1 at halftime.

But unlike that match, which saw St. Hubert capture the game with two second-half goals, CSP United's offense came alive. Early in the second half, a corner kick by Gianna Sarmento was knocked home by Vallely, and that was quickly followed by a goal from Sarmento that came off a long shot. Abby Fleisig later added a goal off a pass from Abby Free to ice the game.

Cara Milano had played well in net, and the defense of Mackenzie Gosselin, Jordan Grossi, Kaitlyn Duclos, Jadyn Ramos, and Julia Kamp shut down the dangerous forwards who had given them so much trouble in their earlier meeting. Colby Chelo, Sidney Clegg, Olivia Sarmento, and Kassidy Bernardo also worked tirelessly on attack, pinning back St. Hubert for long periods of time.
