Ricard Jewelers What makes one diamond more expensive than another and is it cheaper to buy online? Diamond prices generally depend on four factors. These are often referred to as the four Cs. Carat weight, Color, Cut and Clarity all determine price on a stone. A one carat diamond is equal to 100 points just as there are 100 pennies in a dollar bill. Thus, diamonds are usually listed by size: .25pts, .50pts, 1.00ct etc. The larger a single stone is, the more expensive per carat. Color ranges from D-Z. Acceptable color ranges are usually D-F which is colorless and G-J which is near colorless. Below this diamonds often appear yellow. Cut refers to not only the shape of the stone; round, emerald, heart, pear, marquis and princess but also the ratio of depth and width of a stone. A stone that is to deep or to wide for its size is considered an ill proportioned cut and is generally cheaper. Finally, Clarity determines your final cost. The cleaner a stone is the more expensive it is. Diamonds that have large eye visible inclusions are generally poor grades and make a stone less expensive. Jewelers that take the time to explain these factors and sell certified stones by one of the major grading compa- nies are your best bet. Diamonds bought online often try to get around one of these factors to offer what appears to be a cheaper price. If something appears to good of a deal it usually is. Buyer Beware.
