David B. Balcom - Smithfield

David B. Balcom, 70, of Smithfield, died Friday, March 22, 2013. He was the husband of Claire (LaBonte) Balcom. Born in Providence, he was the son of the late Everett Balcom and Mabel C. (McCarthy) Grenier. Mr. Balcom had been a resident of Smithfield since 1964.

David Balcom was a retired supervisor of the Town of Smithfield Recreation Department, where he worked for 22 years. He was a proud member of the United States Marine Corps. He was a founding member on the Smithfield Veteran’s Memorial Committee who established the War Memorial in Deerfield Park. He was a member of the Smithfield Heritage Hall of Fame Nominating Committee.

David loved baseball and was a lifelong avid Red Sox fan. In 1981 he helped to create the Men’s softball league in the Town of Smithfield that continues today. Dave was a player coach for the Red Team for more than 20 years.

He was a member of the Smithfield Little League and previously was honored as their Man of the Year. Mr. Balcom coached many of Smithfield’s youth through his volunteer work as a coach for the Smithfield Little League, Smithfield Youth Basketball League and Saint Michael’s CYO Basketball teams.

Besides his wife he is survived by his children, Laura J. Gaule and her husband Raymond of Smithfield, Ricky D. Balcom and his wife MinJu of Chesapeake, Va., Joseph S. Balcom and his wife Karen of Smithfield, Thomas E. Balcom and his wife Lisa of Kingston, Mass., and Donna M. Capalbo and her husband Jason of Smithfield; and his 11 grandchildren, Raymond Gaule, Ashley Gaule, Haley Balcom, Jacob Balcom, Nathan Balcom, Rachel Balcom, Jessica Balcom, Alexandra Balcom, David Balcom, Nicholas Capalbo and Valerie Capalbo. He was the brother of the late Janice Croft and Joyce Bergantine.

His funeral was held on Wednesday, March 27 from the ANDERSON-WINFIELD Funeral Home, Greenville, with a Mass of Christian Burial in St. Michael’s Church in Georgiaville. Burial with military honors was in St. Ann’s Cemetery, Cranston.
