Neighbor runs into burning Woonsocket triple decker to alert neighbors

WOONSOCKET – A fire on Sunday, Sept. 23 on South Main Street left more than a dozen people homeless, but all of the residents got out safely thanks, in part, to quick action by a brave neighbor.

Michael Ptaszek spotted the fire at 631 South Main St. and ran into the burning building, knocking on doors to alert residents while battling thick black smoke. The dozen plus people inside escaped without serious injury.

The Woonsocket Fire Department was called to the blaze at 12:06 p.m. The three-alarm fire engulfed the 2.5 story multifamily building and two firefighters were injured while fighting the blaze. They were treated for minor injuries at Landmark Medical Center.
