Fire Department will hold MDA collection day Saturday

NORTH PROVIDENCE - The North Providence Fire Department, with the Muscular Dystrophy Association, will hold a special one-day collection drive on Saturday, Sept. 28.

Firefighters will be collecting money at their regular locations, both Mineral Spring Avenue firehouses and the firehouses on Smith Street and Fruit Hill Avenue.

The collection, sponsored by the Muscular Dystrophy Association, is meant to help a retired North Providence Firefighter who is battling ALS, also known as Lou Gehrig's Disease.

Firefighter David DiIorio, a 30-year retired veteran who spent years working and supporting the MDA cause, is now in need of assistance, according to firefighters.

His friends in the department say they appreciate residents' support and generosity over the years, and ask for their help again in assisting DiIorio.
