Love of cooking shows at 'j. joy's sugar shack'

Linda Santos is the owner of j. joy's sugar shack at 1910 Smith St. in North Providence.

NORTH PROVIDENCE - Linda Santos started "j. joy's sugar shack" on the premise that anyone's day will be a whole lot sweeter after visiting.

But the store, at 1910 Smith St., is much more than just scratch-baked desserts and "beautiful custom cakes." Customers will find the fresh-baked savory items they love, from spinach pies to pizza strips.

Santos, a lifelong resident of Pawtucket, says she has been baking, cooking and creating goodies for more than 35 years since her childhood. A 1985 graduate of Johnson and Wales, she always dreamed of opening her own "eatery." With her son now in college, and both of her knees now replaced, "it was time to take the leap."

The menu here, which is made exactly to customer specifications, includes a full assortment of gluten-free items.

Santos' store is currently closed to retail sales until Oct. 18, but is open for special orders. When it does reopen for retail sales, the store will have a large assortment of Halloween-themed items.

Located across the street from Pinto's Barber Salon, j. joy's sugar shack is located in the top left corner of the building. The store is named for her son, Justin Joi.

Santos offers delivery for any order within three miles of her store. Deliveries outside of that area would be subject to an extra charge, she said.

Santos specializes in novelty custom cakes for everything from children's birthdays and milestone birthdays to regular adult birthdays, weddings and anniversaries, among others. She can do everything from a simple cake to one with an elaborate design.

She can do pastry platters, boxes of breakfast pastries, brownie and cookie trays, and dessert buffets.
