Robert L. Nuzum - Cumberland

Robert L. Nuzum, 83, of Mendon Road, Cumberland, R.I., passed away on Friday, Sept. 27, 2013. He was the beloved husband of Tomoko T. Nuzum for more than 58 years. Born in Niagara Falls, N.Y., he was the son of the late Allen W. and Bessie M. Nuzum.

He lived in Cumberland for the past seven years, and previously resided in Stamford and Orange, Connecticut; Edison and Jersey City, New Jersey; and New York. He and his wife moved to Rhode Island in 2006 to be closer to their only grandson, Chance Nuzum, also of Cumberland.

Mr. Nuzum was a certified public accountant who ran his own accounting business for more than 30 years. He loved helping both individuals and businesses with their tax problems, and was devoted to his work and family. Prior to his private practice, he held accounting positions in several firms including Avco Corporation, Warnaco, and Price Waterhouse.

He was a graduate of the University of Buffalo School of Business Administration and New York University. Mr. Nuzum was a U.S. Army veteran who, while serving in Japan in 1955, met the woman who soon would become his wife and life partner.

Besides his wife Tomoko, he leaves behind a daughter, Janet Nuzum and her husband John Ziolkowski of Arlington, Va.; and a son, Daniel Nuzum, his wife Margarita, and their son and Robert's grandson, Chance, of Cumberland. He also leaves behind three sisters, Erma Cimino, Myrel Shugarts and Ruth Van Orman, all of Las Vegas, Nev. He was preceded in death by his younger brother, Donald Nuzum of Bakersfield, Calif.

A celebration of his life will be held Saturday, Oct. 6, 2013, with visitation and service at the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland, from 8 A.M. to 10 A.M. Burial with military honors will take place immediately thereafter at the Rhode Island Veterans Memorial Cemetery, Exeter, followed by a reception at the Nuzum residence in Cumberland.
