Pedestrian dies in early a.m. accident

CUMBERLAND - Aida Delgado, 78, of Mill Street, out for a 6 a.m. walk on Dexter Street, died last Thursday, Oct. 3, after she was struck by the driver of a Bliss Dairy truck.

The accident occurred west of the High Street intersection, according to Deputy Chief George Stansfield. She had been transported to Rhode Island Hospital and died around 11 a.m.

The truck driver, Robert Zollo of East Providence, had stopped and is cooperating with police who were reconstructing the accident scene. Stansfield said Friday the driver had not been charged, though the investigation was continuing. Stansfield said the dim light of the early morning may have been factor in the tragedy. Alcohol had been ruled out, he said.

She leaves her husband, Joao Delgado; her son, Ramiro A. Delgado of Cumberland; three sisters, Palmira de Jesus Mendes Oliveira, Ilda Gaspar and Celina Branco; and four grandchildren.
