R.I. table tennis tourney planned

LINCOLN - The Rhode Island Table Tennis Association will hold its 2013 Open Table Tennis Tournament on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19 and 20, at its headquarters in the Manville Community Center, 30 Railroad St.

The annual event, which is sanctioned by United States of America Table Tennis and sponsored by the R.I. Table Tennis Association, is open to players of all abilities, who are paired against players of similar ability.

It offers an "Unrated" section for new players that have never played in a tournament and six graduated levels for rated players up to the championship/open division. The unrated event is a double elimination format, which assures all entrants of at least two matches. All other events are round robin format, which assures entrants of four or five matches.

Cash prizes for the top places in the open division will be awarded. Matches begin at 1:30 p.m. on Saturday and 9 a.m. on Sunday.

In previous years the tournament has attracted Olympic/international caliber athletes from Jamaica, Japan, Sweden, and Iran, as well as the United States. Local favorites include Xue Di of Brown University, and Yukang Yan.

There is no admission, and spectators are welcome.
