Walsh honored as Volunteer of the Year

SMITHFIELD - Eric Walsh, of Cumberland, was honored as Volunteer of the Year by the Audubon Society of Rhode Island at the society's annual meeting held on Oct. 20.

Audubon recognized Walsh for his dedication as a volunteer and his strong commitment to Audubon. For the past year Walsh undertook the daunting task of managing the Rhode Island Osprey Monitoring Program for Audubon, which monitors the breeding success of ospreys across the state.

The Osprey Monitoring project involved coordinating 70 volunteers from March through July. These individuals monitored 208 osprey nests at sites across the state. During his time with the project, he has assisted in the development of the project's GIS map and database, website, online data submission system, and training materials. Walsh was also involved in the implementation of an internship in 2012 that surveyed the location of each known osprey nest to establish a more accurate site map and set accurate directions for osprey monitors and future scientific research.
