Learn about American chestnut tree restoration Dec. 16

NORTH PROVIDENCE - The North Providence Environment Commission invites the community to a presentation by Yvonne Federowicz, president of the American Chestnut Foundation's Rhode Island and Massachusetts chapter, on Monday, Dec. 16, at 7 p.m. in the North Providence Union Free Public Library Community Room, 1810 Mineral Spring Ave.

The free event will focus on efforts to restore the native American chestnut tree that once dominated forests and provided beauty, food and lumber before succumbing to a fungal blight in the 1900s.

Topics will include: local chestnut history; identification; ecology; and the local chapter's restoration work that involves 27 breeding orchards, three new seed orchards, and demonstration planting at the Roger Williams Park Edible Forest Garden.
