Tolman bakers send healthy treats to veterans' party

PAWTUCKET - At Tolman High School last week, students in Krista Taft-LaScola's consumer science class learned a lesson in sugar-free and gluten-free baking while providing cookies for a Christmas party by the Disabled American Veterans Chapter 9 in Warwick and the Operation Stand Down organization of Johnston.

The link between students and veterans is Freshmen Academy mathematics teacher Timothy Howe, who is also the commander of the DAV.

He had reached out last year for some treats from this class and found a willing response again this year, he said.

The cookies were all packed up to go last Friday morning.

Howe credits hard work by the students and teachers, including the baking that was finished up after hours.
