Officials remind residents of shoveling ordinance

PAWTUCKET - This winter, city officials say they're relying on Pawtucket citizens to be "helpful, responsible, and aware" of the need to remove all snow and ice from the public sidewalks including walks and ramps leading to a crosswalk.

A city ordinance requires removal of snow and ice from public sidewalks by the abutting property owner, with violations subject to fines.

If any citizen or business owner has a concern regarding sidewalk snow removal, representatives from the Division of Zoning and Code Enforcement are ready to help. Call 401-728-0500, ext. 347, Monday to Friday, 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 a.m. to report locations for possible violations.

For seniors and the disabled, a volunteer shoveling program is overseen by seniors liaison Beth Roberge. The program, in its third year, relies primarily on youths willing to help their neighbors at no charge. The service is subject to availability of volunteers and currently there is a waiting list. Call Roberge at 401-728-0500, ext. 241, or email broberge@pawtucketri.com for more information.
