Curtain closes on Twin River Casino's comedy club

LINCOLN - Twin River Casino officials have announced the March 1 closure of its Catch a Rising Star comedy club.

The lease was not extended and officials are still "contemplating best use for the space," said spokeswoman Patricia Doyle.

Comedian Frank O'Donnell, who has performed regularly at the club since it opened in 2007 when the casino was renovated and expanded, said "it's not fun" to see the club close, but added that he understands it is a business decision.

"I feel badly that we've lost a comedy stage," he said, noting that the only other full-time comedy stage left in Rhode Island is the Comedy Connection in East Providence. "It's not a good thing for the industry. It's sad. I'm old enough to have been to this rodeo before."

Officials have previously reported an increase of 30 percent in the casino's food and beverage revenue since table games opened last summer.
