CUMBERLAND - To honor the Cumberland High School Class of 1957, a stone memorial was erected at Tucker Field and a dedication ceremony is scheduled for Sunday, June 8.

Dave Cruz, president of the class, said he brought up the idea of creating a monument to recognize the class during their reunion in 2012.

The idea was well received and an ad hoc committee chairman was elected along with a supporting committee to begin fundraising.

Cruz said James Dacey, chairman, and committee members Lois (Walsh) Schillinger, Theresa (Custodio) Tracey, Dorothy (Carr) Tessier and Barbara (Konicki) Horne were able to raise more than $4,000 toward the memorial.

He said town officials were fully supportive of the idea. Parks and Recreation Director Michael Crawley supervised the project.

A granite slab, surrounded by flowers and a tree, was engraved to say "Class of 1957 Memorial Honoring Classmates & Faculty."

After all the memorial costs were paid off, Cruz said, Dacey suggested that the remaining funds go toward the Cumberland High School graduates in the form of student scholarships.

Money was given to students attending Salve Regina University and Providence College, he said.

Cruz said assisting students with money for college ties right in with the mission of the new committee: "to organize a select group of individuals, to contact past/present alumni classes and to ask for their help in obtaining scholarship dollars in order to help CHS graduating students achieve their dream in pursuit of educational goals."

"This initiative is kind of a no-brainer, help CHS to help CHS students and all parties will benefit," he said.

Cruz said he would like to see alumni form a group and organize a Cumberland High School Alumni Association.

The dedication ceremony will be held on Sunday, June 8, at 1:30 p.m. at Tucker Field, adjacent to the tennis courts.
