Mary R. Titherington - North Smithfield

Mary R. (Pfefferle) Titherington of North Smithfield passed away on October 11, 2014. She was the wife of the late Stephen Zifcak and William Howard Titherington. Born in North Providence, she was the daughter of the late Louis and Bertha (Tavernier) Pfefferle.

Mary attended Roger Williams College, graduating in May of 1981 with a degree in Paralegal Services. Using this degree, she worked under former esquires Roland Fournier and Tom Kane. Before that, she was employed at Western Union.

Mary was also heavily involved in local and state politics. She served as the chairman of the Republican Town Committee, president of the North Smithfield Republican Women, and ran for state representative. She served on the board of trustees for the North Smithfield Library, as a member of RWC Alumni Association Executive Committee, and helped organize a fund-raiser for the North Smithfield Ambulance.

Mary was a champion on many fronts, and most literally was the RI girls champion Baton Twirler 1943. With an insatiable joy for life, she never stopped twirling and in that respect, her spirit will continue.

Mary is survived by her daughter, Christine Young of North Smithfield; her sister, Elaine Dwyer of North Smithfield; three grandchildren, Justin and Michelle Young of Pahoa, Hawaii, and Mary-Beth Young of Washington, D.C.; and two great-granddaughters, Kasia and Leiwia Young. She was the sister of the late Lorraine Riopel.

Her funeral will be held Wednesday October 15, 2014, at 10 A.M. in the Slatersville Congregational Church, On the Commons, Slatersville. Burial will follow in Union Cemetery, Smithfield Road, North Smithfield. Calling hours will be held Tuesday from 4 to 7 P.M. in the Holt Funeral Home, 510 South Main St. Woonsocket.
