Claire R. Houle - Woonsocket

Claire R. (Gelinas) Houle, 88, of Rhodes Avenue died October 28, 2014, in The Friendly Home, Woonsocket. She was the wife of the late Maurice “Moe” Houle.

Born in Woonsocket, she was the daughter of the late Eugene and Loretta (Bartholomy) Gelinas. She was a former resident of North Smithfield, Pompano Beach, Fla., and Blackstone, Mass.

A 1944 graduate of St. Clare High School, Woonsocket, and a 1946 graduate of St. Vincent’s School of Nursing, Worcester, Mrs. Houle worked as a sales person in the Ladies Sportswear Department of McCarthy's Department Store in Woonsocket, retiring in 1984.

Claire and her husband Moe were the owners of the Monument Tavern, Woonsocket. She was an active volunteer with Meals-on-Wheels, a member of the Leisure and Pleasure Club of Holy Family Parish, Woonsocket, and was an advocate for the Catholic Family Movement.

She is survived by a son, Paul Houle and his wife Kathleen of Lincoln; two daughters, Celeste Oliver and her husband Blair of Blackstone, Mass., and Laurie Houle and her husband Patrick Tierney of Narragansett; three sisters, Lucille Field of Houston, Texas, Jacqueline Bessette of South Windsor, Conn., and Jeanne Matarese of Riverside; four grandchildren, Kerri Slezak, Devyn Oliver, Ellen Oliver and Christian Tierney; and one great-grandson, Elliot Slezak. She was the sister of the late Roger Gelinas.

A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday, November 8, 2014, at 9 A.M. in St. Paul's Church, 48 St. Paul St., Blackstone, MA. Burial will follow in Precious Blood Cemetery, Rathbun Street, Woonsocket. Calling Hours are omitted. Arrangements are under the direction of the Holt Funeral Home, 510 South Main St., Woonsocket.
