Pawtucket Arts Festival fundraiser will honor Herb Weiss

PAWTUCKET - The Pawtucket Arts Festival raises the curtain on its 17th annual season with a first fundraising event hosted by PAF at the Visitor Center, 175 Main St., on Thursday, May 7.

With a theatrical flourish, PAF and Curtain Up help set the stage for an evening in Pawtucket where the arts, audience, and the sponsors who make the annual Pawtucket Arts Festival possible are in the spotlight.

A reception is planned for PAF's major sponsors from 5 to 6 p.m. Doors open for Curtain Up ticket holders from 6 to 9 p.m. at the Visitor Center, where an evening is planned to evoke memories of favorite events hosted during the annual PAF month of September.

With a tip of the hat to the yearly "Taste of the Valley and Blackstone River Party," Curtain Up guests will be treated to food samplings from the menus of leading area restaurants who are stalwarts of PAF's opening night event that draws thousands to downtown Pawtucket and Slater Mill. A cash bar will be available, and live jazz performed by Providence Brass Band will create a music-themed atmosphere that welcomes conversation, connecting, celebrating and supporting the arts.

The Curtain Up spotlight will fall on Herb Weiss, the recipient of the first PAF Excellence Award. Weiss has long served Pawtucket and Rhode Island as a "foremost ambassador for the arts and culture" through his work as economic and cultural affairs officer for the city, according to a news release. The Excellence Award, designed by Gail Ahlers, will allow guests and colleagues to toast, as well as roast, "the affable administrator, writer, and community volunteer whose tireless efforts have been devoted to the Pawtucket Arts Festival."

Additionally, the Working River Award will be presented to those who sustain the place of the arts in civic life.

With an array of prominent visual arts, gallery, and theater events also on deck for the evening of May 7 in Pawtucket, visitors to the city are welcome to purchase advance PAF fundraiser tickets and drop in as part of an all-out arts in Pawtucket evening. All are welcome to join the festivities at any point to congratulate Weiss and support the festival that showcases the arts and Pawtucket each September. Tickets are $25 per person and must be purchased by May 1. Tickets may be purchased at Pawtucket City Hall Planning Department, 137 Roosevelt Ave.
