Pawtucket man charged after hitting pedestrian, taking off

CENTRAL FALLS – A Pawtucket man is in custody after police say he ran over another city man and kept driving.

Rigoberto Vasquez, 53, was arraigned before a bail commissioner on charges of driving while intoxicated bodily injury, duty to stop accident resulting in serious injury, refusal to submit to a chemical test, and driving with an expired license.

On Sunday, at around 3:05 a.m., officers responded to the area of 535 Roosevelt Ave. for reports of a pedestrian struck by a vehicle. Upon arrival, the victim, identified as Gary Laramee, 51, of Pawtucket was found lying in the roadway. Laramee is listed in critical condition at Rhode Island Hospital.

A witness told police that the suspect vehicle was a dark-colored Nissan with Massachusetts plates. The driver failed to stop and continued north on Roosevelt Avenue. A vehicle fitting the description, with heavy front-end damage, was stopped several blocks away in Pawtucket.

Vazquez was ordered held on $100,000 bail with surety and later transported to the Adult Correctional Institutions until his re-arraignment in Sixth District Court Tuesday.
