Elaine (Burgess) Cokonis - East Greenwich

Elaine (Burgess) Cokonis, 83, of East Greenwich, R.I., peacefully passed away on Monday, August 22, 2016 at St. Elizabeth Home in East Greenwich. She was the loving wife of the late Charles Peter Cokonis who died on March 9, 1996

Born on March 29, 1933 in New York City, New York, she was the daughter of the late Charles and Marion Burgess.

Elaine was a graduate of Pawtucket West High School, Class of 1950 and received her Bachelor's Degree in Education from the University of Rhode Island, Class of 1954. She enjoyed teaching in the Attleboro, Mass. school system for more than 20 years as a kind and caring elementary school teacher.

A resident of East Greenwich for the last 10 years, she previously lived in Cumberland, R.I., where she raised her family. She was a former member of St. Paul's Episcopal Church in Pawtucket, R.I. That church played an important role in her life: it was there where she was baptized and married, and she later was active in the church's Altar Guild.

She delighted in her Thursday night tennis games, her home, being with her close circle of friends known as "The Group", her pets, and dogs of every kind. More than anything else, she cherished time spent with her family and especially her grandchildren. A woman loved by all who knew her, Elaine was truly the epitome of kindness, gentleness, and compassion, and she will forever be missed.

She is survived by her two beloved daughters: Joanne C. (Cokonis) Eland and her husband, Alan T. Eland, of North Kingstown, R.I., (to whom she was known affectionately as "Lainey"); and Mary Elizabeth "Mary Beth" (Cokonis) Davis of East Greenwich, R.I. She was the adoring "Grandma" of Zachary A. Eland, Jacob C. Eland, and Elaina L. Eland, and the loving "Gammy" of McKenzie E. Davis. She was the niece of the late Stanley and Magnhild Burgess; and the late Blanche Burgess, who lovingly raised Elaine as a young child through her adulthood.
