Norman M. Rouette – North Smithfield

Norman M. Rouette, 89, of Mechanic St., died Sept. 2, 2016, in The Friendly Home, Woonsocket. He was the husband of Katherine (Hogan) Rouette whom he married Aug. 28, 1954. Born in Woonsocket, RI, he was the son of the late Wilfred and Louisia (Girouard) Rouette.

Norman received his Master’s in Education and Administration from Rhode Island College, and his Bachelor’s in Education from Springfield College. Mr. Rouette began his career in education as an elementary school teacher in Coventry and retiring as a Principal for the Woonsocket School Dept. in 1996. He also served as a substitute Principal for North Smithfield, Johnston and Foster-Glocester. Norman was also very involved in athletics, serving as a softball umpire and basketball and football referee, as well as volunteering for the Woonsocket Recreational Youth Basketball program. Mr. Rouette was the Waterfront Director for Camp Boyland in Maine, a member of the Woonsocket YMCA and communicant of and lecturer for St. John the Evangelist Church, North Smithfield. Norman had a true gift for working with children. He enjoyed gardening and spending time with his grandchildren.

Besides his wife he is survived by a son, John Rouette of North Smithfield; two daughters, Nancy Donohue and her husband, Michael, of North Kingstown; and Mary Lou Bertherman and her husband, James, of North Smithfield; a brother, Roger Rouette and his wife, Rita, of Prescott, Ariz., a sister, Muriel LaFontaine and her husband, Charles, of North Smithfield; six grandchildren: Emily Donohue, Jane Donohue and her husband, Marc Harris; Patrick Donohue and his wife, Priya; Amy Zimmerman and her husband, Eric; Lynn Bertherman and Megan Bertherman as well as four great grandchildren, Elena and Jude Harris and Declan and Ronan Zimmerman. He was the brother of the late Jeannette Desplaines and Marcel Rouette.

His funeral will be held Wednesday, Sept. 7, 2016, with a Mass of Christian Burial at 11 a.m. in St. John the Evangelist Church, 63 Church St., North Smithfield. Burial will follow in the parish cemetery. Calling hours are Tuesday from 5-7 p.m., in the Holt Funeral Home, 510 South Main St., Woonsocket.
