Maria Rosa Lopes – Cumberland

Maria Rosa (Gomes) Lopes, 94, of Cumberland, passed away peacefully on Sunday, Dec. 17, 2017, at Mt. St. Rita Health Centre, Cumberland. She was the wife of the late Antonio Lopes and mother of the late Aurora (Lopes) Toste.

Born in Esmolfe, Portugal, she came to the United States in 1954, settling in Cumberland. She was the daughter of the late Joaquim Gomes and Amelia de Jesus.

Rosa is survived by her daughter, Cecilia (Lopes) Raposo, and her husband, Anselmo, of Cumberland, with whom she resided for 13 years before going to Mt. St. Rita. She was the loving grandmother of Antonio Raposo and his wife, Isabel, of Cumberland and great-grandmother of Allison and Shane Raposo. She is also survived by her son-in-law Luciano Toste of Gilroy, California. She also leaves behind sisters and brothers-in-law and several nieces and nephews.

She was the sister of the late Anna de Jesus, Manuel Joaquim Gomes and Albano Gomes.

Mrs. Lopes was a communicant of Our Lady of Fatima Church where she attended mass daily and continued to do the same at Mt. St. Rita until her passing. She loved the outdoors and went for her daily 2-mile walk right up until 91 years young.

A celebration of her life will be held Wednesday, Dec. 20, at 9 a.m., from the J. J. Duffy Funeral Home, 757 Mendon Road, Rt. 122, Cumberland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 10 a.m., at Our Lady of Fatima Church, 1 Fatima Drive, Cumberland. Burial will follow in the Mt. Calvary Cemetery. Relatives and friends are kindly invited. Visiting Hours will be held Tuesday, Dec. 19, from 5 to 7 p.m.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her memory to the Our Lady of Fatima Church or to the Mt. St. Rita Health Centre.
