Joan Adelaide Macaulay – Cumberland

Joan Adelaide (Lowe) Macaulay, 96, of Cumberland, R.I., passed away peacefully on Monday, Aug. 5, 2019. She was the beloved wife of the late James Macaulay who passed away on Oct. 25, 2017.

Born on Feb. 27, 1923, in Manchester, England, she was the daughter of the late James W. Lowe and the late Martha (Grundy) Lowe.

Raised and educated in England, she proudly served her country in the Royal Air Force where she met her husband and in 1957 moved to the United States.

A resident of Cumberland since 1962, Joan took pleasure in her role as a homemaker while at the same time graduating Phi Beta Kappa from the University of Rhode Island.

She attended Murray Unitarian Church in Attleboro, Mass.

Joan was the loving mother of David Macaulay and his wife, Ruthie (Murray) Macaulay, of Norwich, Vt.; Patricia Coppola and her husband, Richard Coppola, of Malvern, Pa.; and Stephen Macaulay and his wife, Christine Macaulay, of Woonsocket, R.I. She was the proud grandmother of eight grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren. Joan was predeceased by her two sisters and one brother and leaves her extended family in England.

All services for Joan will be privately held.
